Chronicles of an Adventuring Bearwere

DireWereTeddy’s State of my Gaming: 7 July 2024

Oh man, it’s already been over a week and I haven’t gotten a second blog post up. I’m aiming for a little more frequency and consistency than that. Hopefully, I’ll achieve it. This is just kind of a general “how’s things going and what I am up to post”. I don’t know if I’m going to make them with any frequency, but I might do so monthly, or maybe quarterly.

TL;DR (or BLUF, if you prefer), it’s been pretty slim and slow lately. My two campaigns haven’t had a session in several weeks, and it’s unclear when the next will occur. Life’s been pretty busy for me with work and family obligations, and it looks to continue to be so for the near future.

I have managed to play a single session of D&D 5e, run by my lovely wife on my birthday. Her very first session of game mastering, using the adventure included in Justin Alexander’s So You Want to be a Game Master.

I played Darov, the half-orc paladin, who accompanied some fellow adventurers into the lava tubes of Firebelch Cavern. Within, we discovered strange creatures comprised of mud, some kind of arcane machinery, and magma people using the mud creatures to harvest fruit from an unknown tree, before we fell back to seek safety and take a rest.

Beyond that, I’ve done little work on prepping my own games. There’s plenty of work to be done, but finding enough time to shepherd my focus in the right direction is always a struggle. I am hoping to be able to run a session in 3e campaign later today, but I’m uncertain it will happen.

Beyond that, I’ve been using my free time to play some video games, read books, and watch some tv and movies.

Currently playing through Pillars of Eternity on XBox via GamePass, which comes in fits and starts. The worldbuilding is nice, the variations on the standard fantasy RPG classes are interesting, but I’m not a fan of the combat system. Managing an entire party in real time, even with pauses, is overwhelming, but they definitely need managing.

I also bought up Dredge, which was a delight for the few hours I played the other night. It’s a calm, expedition-based fishing game with a growing sense of strangeness. I’m looking forward to digging into it deeper.

I’ve got a few more games lined up for after I finish (or more likely, tire) of these. I’ll probably comment on them as I play.

As for what to expect on the blog, I’ve got a few ideas in the wings I’m slowly fleshing out. I want to write up some stuff on my current campaigns and then start posting sessions reports as they happen. I also have a few general posts focused on different ideas that I’m drafting and prepping. I’m aiming to get something else up within the next few days. I’d like to be posting a couple times of week if I can manage it.

Until next time, God bless and happy gaming!
